Festivals

Summary of Good Practice Recommendations

Festivals have a responsibility to:

  • have a strong sense of artistic endeavour with a clear curatorial vision, built through trust and strong relationships with community and artists

  • disclose and make visible their social, cultural, ethical and economic values and aims 

  • meet legal obligations in the areas of workplace health and safety (see Workplace Health and Safety), insurance (see Insurance), accessibility (see Access Rights for d/Deaf and Disabled People) and intellectual property (see Intellectual Property)

  • acknowledge, consult with and seek consent from Traditional Custodians, and uphold Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property, see First Nations

  • consider diversity in programming and reduce barriers for participation 

  • ensure application and selection processes are equitable, see Equitable Application Processes

  • consider, communicate, plan and, where feasible, ensure accessibility requirements for artists and audiences, see Access Rights for d/Deaf and Disabled People

  • undertake APRA licensing, if required

  • be transparent about funding sources, see Sponsorship

  • pay industry-standard artist fees, separately from production and access requirements, see Payment Standards

  • advertise and promote the event

Artists have a responsibility to:

Agreements should outline:

  • all responsibilities, terms, timeframes and fees

  • reflect the nature and stage of the engagement (research, development, presentation)

  • freight, installation, staffing and travel costs

  • cancellation clauses 

  • responsibility for insurances for loss or damage and public liability, see Insurances

  • credits for the creative team

  • engagement with Traditional Custodians, Acknowledgement and Welcome to Country provisions, see First Nations
