Community Engagement

Summary of Good Practice Recommendations

Artists and organisations have a responsibility to:

  • embed direct community engagement and actively build community around the project

  • centre the rights of the community and collaborators

  • remove barriers to participation and engagement

  • embed community self-determination relating to all participation and input

  • seek relevant cultural permissions and advice 

  • ensure that Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property principles are upheld, see First Nations

  • embed accessibility (see Access Rights for d/Deaf and Disabled People), and equity in representation (see Racial Equity and Representation)

  • meet obligations in the areas of insurance (see Insurance) and WHS (see Workplace Health and Safety

  • define the scope, duration and project roles and responsibilities of the project

  • consider the authorship and intellectual property rights, see Intellectual Property

  • develop a clear social contract with participating community, complemented by best-practice legal obligations with regards to contracts

  • ensure the project is resourced appropriately and timelines and budgets reflect the complex and sometimes costly nature of community engaged practice

  • educate yourself and/or your organisation on the needs and experiences of the community you are engaging
