Awards, Prizes and Competitions

Summary of Good Practice Recommendations

Organisers have a responsibility to:

  • describe the award, prize or competition, and what is offered to the artist if selected

  • provide easy access to consistent, clear and detailed terms and conditions, timelines, and the obligations of both artists and the organiser

  • ensure that entry processes are straightforward, accessible and facilitate alternatives to include artists with particular access needs, see Access Rights for d/Deaf and Disabled People

  • promote equity by reducing the cost to artists

  • clearly explain all fees, commissions and related costs of participation, see Equitable Application Processes

  • develop and maintain cultural awareness among staff, and implement procedures to protect cultural safety of all artists, see Racial Equity and Representation

  • maintain fairness through equitable pre-selection and judging processes, and published judging criteria, see Equitable Application Processes

  • promote inclusion through the selection and rotation of judges from diverse backgrounds

  • respect and uphold artist copyright, moral rights (see Intellectual Property) and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (see First Nations)

  • provide a point of contact for artists with queries or alternate requirements

Artists have a responsibility to:

  • be aware that terms and conditions of entry could be legally binding

  • ensure that they can meet all obligations of entry and selection prior to entering

  • in acquisitive prizes, ensure the prize money will offset potential sale price

  • provide true information in entries
