Case Study
Accessibility of Entry Processes
Yasmin is an artist who intends to enter an upcoming art prize, to be held at a major public gallery. Due to the way the online entry form has been set up she finds it challenging to complete it and comply with the entry requirements listed on the website.
Within the terms and conditions (which were listed in a prominent position), the gallery states that artists with access needs can contact Stuart, their accessibility officer, for assistance with their entry. Over the phone, Stuart and Yasmin collaboratively plan an alternative entry format in response to her abilities.
Yasmin uses her device to record herself verbally addressing all of the entry requirements, and also includes footage of the artwork she intends to enter. Upon receipt of Yasmin’s emailed entry, Stuart calls Yasmin, and processes her entry fee payment over the phone.
While smaller organisations may not have the resources to employ an accessibility officer, it is recommended that organisers collaborate with artists to facilitate equal access to their award, prize or competition.
